Congratulations to our NSJCA U13 side, who defeated Parramatta by 63 runs in their Grand Final on Sunday at Bennett Park to win the WS Gee Shield for 2019.
Congratulations to coach Warwick Adlam and manager Jeff Winslow, along with all the players.
North Shore Captain Will Adlam won the toss and had no hesitation in electing to bat first on an excellent outfield when tails came up trumps.
The team started solidly but the outfield turned out to be surprisingly slow and the first boundary did not come until the 19th over. But in finals wickets are the key and the openers withstood the Parramatta attack to put on 63 before Justin Nielsen (32) was the first casualty. Will Sutton (30) was joined by Ben Hocking (16) who was given a licence at number 3 to up the run rate scoring, which he duly did, contributed the vast majority of their partnership before both were removed in quick succession. This brought the captain to the wicket but while Adlam (56 from 46) was looking to continue his fine run of scores in this competition, he was forced to be patient against some very tight spin bowling before accelerating in the last 10 overs. The middle order set themselves for the run home and did extremely well with 48 runs coming from the final 5 overs.
North Shore had posted a target of 5 for 178 off their allotted 40 overs and the body language was there for all to see as the players walked from the field.
Then with ball in hand North Shore struck early with Jonty Snyman (2/11) looking extremely dangerous as he has done all season. A great catch to Will Sutton 3rd ball of the innings set the tone for the match. In his third over Snyman had stumps flying in all directions and Parramatta were 2 for 5. North Shore then maintained control over the game by restricting the runs and the required rate was up over 7 in no time. This combined with a complete all round fielding display led to the need to chase runs and the inevitable flow of wickets that follow. The scoreboard pressure mounted and finally Darcy Aylmer (1/13) created the breakthrough that would instigate the collapse. Zack Winslow (3/13) was superb again and finished the competition as the leading wicket taker with 19 to his name. Samuel Jackson (3/28) reaped the rewards of a great team bowling performance. Having saved his best for the final, he had the batsmen playing and missing with regular monotony as Parramatta were eventually all out for 115.
The catching and fielding were instrumental in the win and so this report would be incomplete without re-living Darcy Aylmer sprinting along the boundary and taking a high ball right out in front of the crowd. The cheers were heard back at NSJCA headquarters.
This Championship win was a fitting end to what has been an exceptional season for this team who remained undefeated in the inaugural season of the CNSW Metropolitan Youth Championship.
On the way to this undefeated season there were also some fantastic individual performances produced by the group:
- A hat trick to Callum Parkinson against Northern District;
- A hundred for Will Sutton 131 against St George;
- Zack Winslow taking 5 for 13 against last season Premiers Inner West Harbour and claiming the most wickets in the competition;
- Sam Jackson taking 13 catches and claiming the most in the competition for a non-keeper.
But no one will forget the day 3 boys all made their maiden representative hundreds in the same innings against Northern District as the team posted 1 for 404;
- Jack Blazey 171*
- Alex Lee-Young 108 and
- Will Adlam 104*
All three of these players finished in the top 10 leading run scorers in the completion:
- Jack Blazey in 9th with 338 runs at an average of 56
- Alex Lee-Young in 4th with 430 runs at an average of 86, and
- Will Adlam in 2nd with 507 runs at an average of 63.
Congratulations go to all our NSW Youth Championship teams who represented the North Shore in this competition with many team and individual achievements and victories.
